Beyond Projects: Designing STEAM Units That Actually Transfer Learning

Let me say something that might make you uncomfortable: most STEAM projects are just cute.

They look amazing in the hallway. They photograph well for social media. Students have fun, and the principal can brag to colleagues and bosses about all the learning that was done in the photo op that got created.

At STEAMnLit™, we are not designing activities. We are designing transfer.

Because if students cannot take what they learned in one space and apply it somewhere else — another class, another problem, real life — then we didn't build understanding. We built an experience. And experiences alone don't close opportunity gaps.

Projects vs. Transfer Learning

In her book Teaching for Tomorrow: A Blended Learning Experience — now available as an ebook — Cheree' talks about a hard truth teachers already know: students don't struggle because they lack creativity. They struggle because school often teaches skills in isolation.

  • Writing happens only in ELA.

  • Data analysis happens only in math.

  • Inquiry happens only in science.

  • Creativity gets pushed into electives.

Real life doesn't work that way. Engineers write. Scientists argue claims with evidence. Designers analyze data. Entrepreneurs read critically and communicate ideas clearly. So why are we still teaching as if knowledge lives in separate rooms?

The truth is, this is a Eurocentric approach to learning. Modern-day education is the descendant of residential boarding schools and factory-model education. It was never designed to create critical thinkers and leaders. It was designed as a system of control.

Literacy Embedded in Science

A true STEAM unit doesn't add reading at the end. Literacy becomes the engine. When students design a sustainable city, they should also:

  • Read informational texts

  • Evaluate sources

  • Write technical explanations

  • Defend solutions using evidence

Suddenly, reading has purpose. Students aren't answering comprehension questions — they're reading because their design depends on understanding.

That's transfer.

Writing Lives in Math Too

One of the biggest shifts we push through STEAMnLit™ is this:

My senior year, a guidance counselor who didn't think I was college-bound told me I could skip math for my last year of high school. That decision came after years of barely passing my classes without ever actually understanding the material.

In strong STEAM units, students:

  • Justify calculations

  • Write reasoning statements

  • Compare design efficiency

  • Argue which solution works best

Math stops being silent problem-solving and becomes communication. And communication is literacy. This is success.

Systems Thinking in Design

Real-world problems are messy. They involve trade-offs, constraints, unintended consequences, and interconnected systems. When students design solutions through STEAM:

  • Technology impacts society

  • Science affects environment

  • Engineering decisions influence economics

  • Human behavior changes outcomes

Students begin asking higher-level questions:

→ What happens if we change one variable?
→ Who benefits from this solution?
→ What problem might this create next?

That's not a project. That's systems thinking.

Standards Alignment Without Killing Creativity

Here's the misconception: teachers think rigor and creativity compete — that if students are enjoying thinking differently, they must not be showing mastery.

They don't compete. The strongest STEAM units align directly to:

  • Literacy standards

  • Math practices

  • Scientific inquiry

  • Speaking & listening skills

  • Design thinking frameworks

Students are still creating — but every creative decision requires academic reasoning. Fun becomes rigorous. Creativity becomes measurable. Learning becomes transferable.
