Creating Joy in Teaching Again

A teacher and students gathered around a table, laughing together during a classroom project

There was a time when I couldn’t wait for Monday morning.

I loved planning lessons. I looked forward to seeing my students. Even after difficult days, I went home believing tomorrow would be another opportunity to make a difference.

Somewhere along the way, that feeling changed.

Not overnight.

Slowly.

The paperwork grew. The expectations multiplied. The emails never stopped. One day, I realized I was counting the days until the next break instead of looking forward to the next lesson. That realization hurt—not because I stopped loving my students, but because I had forgotten how to love the work.

If you’ve ever felt that way, hear me: your joy isn’t gone. It’s buried. And we can uncover it.

Joy Doesn’t Disappear—It Gets Crowded Out

Many educators believe they’ve “lost their passion.” I don’t buy it. Passion rarely disappears; it gets suffocated beneath the weight of unrealistic expectations and the constant pressure to do more with less.

The tragedy isn’t that we stop caring; it’s that we forget what caring used to feel like.

Remember Your “Why”

Your “why” still exists—it’s just harder to hear beneath the noise of compliance reports and midnight emails. Sometimes, rediscovering joy begins by remembering the person you were before education convinced you that productivity mattered more than purpose.

Four Ways to Invite Joy Back

Knowing your “why” is only the first step; the real challenge is integrating it into a hectic day. Here’s how to operationalize that purpose through small, daily habits.

  • Celebrate progress, not perfection — stop chasing the “viral” lesson. Success is helping one student believe in themselves.

  • Protect one thing that fuels you — guard that time like it’s non-negotiable.

  • Give yourself permission to be human — relationships outperform perfectly designed lessons every time.

  • Run the “Bright Spot” audit — before you leave school, ask what made you smile today. Try the three-post-it rule: write down three moments that remind you why you started, and stick them to your monitor for tomorrow morning.

You Don’t Need a Different Career

Sometimes we convince ourselves the only answer is to leave education. For some, that is the right path. But for many, we don’t need a different profession—we need a different relationship with the one we already love.

Less guilt. More grace. Less perfection. More presence.

Joy often returns when we stop trying to be the “perfect teacher” and simply become ourselves again.

Tomorrow, try just one of these shifts. Not all of them—just one. See what happens when you decide to protect your own joy.
